Both engines provide adequate power and fuel economy though they are outperformed by the engines offered by several competitors.  fusion's ride quality is as good as any car in the class, save perhaps the toyota camry. Available all-wheel drive and a new sport package make fine handling even better.  the cabin is comfortable and well designed with controls that are intuitive and easy to operate. An optional sport appearance package comes with a firmer suspension and sporty interior and exterior styling cues. Antilock brakes and a tire-pressure monitor are now standard, while rear obstacle detection becomes an option. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, a five-speed automatic transmission is optional 875). Some people, including us, like the aggressive, angular look of the fusion, some don't. We'd like to note that polarizing designs are often more successful than bland designs that neither offend nor excite anyone. In short, we think this is a good-looking car.  the styling features large headlights and a bold grille. Three thick chrome bars across the grille have a razor-like appearance and make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  when the fusion was first introduced, ford executives said its three-bar horizontal grille would become the signature styling cue for ford cars. Since then it has been seen on concept vehicles, as well as the edge crossover vehicle and the new taurus and newly restyled focus. A fold along the top edges of the front fenders runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the rear deck.  the fusion features a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look.  the overall effect is pleasing. The chrome on the car contrasts nicely with the body work, especially on dark-colored models or red. Gaps between body panels seem a bit larger than those on some of the other cars in the class.  all-wheel-drive models have awd badging on the rear deck. While the 17-inch wheels that drive the awd sel models are the same design, they have a tell-tale hash mark to identify all-wheel-drive models.  the sport appearance package features a black chrome grille, color-keyed fog lights, a unique rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, and most notably, 18-inch aluminum wheels on lower profile tires.  the fusion fits into the ford car lineup between the compact focus and the big taurus sedan. It has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares its basic floorpan with the mazda6, its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says fusion has a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good because a rigid structure is the key to a smooth ride and responsive handling. interiorthe cabin of the ford fusion is comfortable and benefits from straightforward controls.  the front seats manage to be slightly soft, yet supportive enough for long drives. A standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel and the six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, standard on the se and sel models, helps drivers get comfortable, be they short or tall.  in keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting. The lighter colored interiors look friendlier.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent-sized buttons make the radio and climate controls easy to operate. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  se and sel models have a front passenger seatback that folds down, making it possible to haul extra-long items. Heated front seats are an option on sel models with leather seating. Fusions equipped with the new sport appearance package have red seat inserts (cloth or leather) and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  the new sync communications and entertainment system can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift-over height, making it easy to load groceries, luggage or cargo. But ford's new flagship is larger and more substantial and comes with much more standard equipment.  the five hundred boasts a body structure and safety technology developed by volvo and first used on volvo's s80 luxury sedan and then for its highly acclaimed xc90 sport utility vehicle. Ford acquired the swedish automaker famous for its passenger-protecting innovations in 1999. When it came time to develop the five hundred (and its upscale cousin, the mercury montego), ford imported volvo's best structural and safety engineers to work on the project. The five hundred is available with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter giving it more stable handling and better traction, particularly in inclement weather.  ford developed the five hundred as a successor to the taurus and to compete with cars such as the brand new chrysler 300, the venerable toyota avalon, and the aging chevrolet impala. The driver sits relatively high, and the roomy front seats offer a commanding view of the road. Back-seat passengers will not complain about being cramped, either. The back seats fold down to increase cargo capacity. The six-speed automatic transmission that comes standard helps the engine deliver responsive performance and good fuel economy. All-wheel-drive models come with a continually variable transmission that performs the same feat. lineupthe ford five hundred is available in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited.  each is powered by a 3. 0-liter v6 called the duratec 30, which is tuned to provide 203 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. That power flows through either of two very effective transmissions. Also available are a safety and security package for the se with side and canopy airbags, anti-theft perimeter alarm and lights and a safety package for the sel and limited with the side and canopy airbags. walkaroundford first used the five hundred designation in numerical form on the highest trim version of its 1957 fairlane model and the car helped ford overtake chevrolet in the sales race. When ford launched a new flagship, the galaxie, in 1959, it again used the '500' badge to indicate the most upscale version. It also rides on a wheelbase that is 4. 5 inches longer, which not only gives the car its solid, luxury-car stance but enhances smooth ride quality.  the chief designer says it was a challenge to sculpt a ford-styled body around a volvo chassis, and adds that designers used what he calls 'plainer surfaces with taut lines' to give the car a modern look without losing its passenger car proportions. The five hundred's rounded forms offer a definite alternative to the more upright, angular chrysler 300.  the five hundred's face has large, jewel-styled and multi-bulb triangular headlight elements on either side of a wide, trapezoidal grille. Chrome accents the front edges of the bumper. There are similar chrome accents on the rear bumper and another that bisects the doors and provides a visual bridge between slightly flared wheel arches. Chrome also frames the side windows, which include large third windows that give the five hundred more of a luxury car profile.  the tall trunk lid has a spoiler-like lip along its top trailing edge. Those who need even more space for people and cargo can opt for the freestyle, a crossover wagon based on the five hundred. Those who want a smaller and less expensive vehicle will next year be able to get the fusion, another mid-size sedan that's smaller than the taurus. interioralthough the 2005 ford five hundred's exterior is a foot shorter than the full-size ford crown victoria sedan, the new car has nearly as much passenger room (107. 1 cubic feet for the five hundred vs. 108. 2 for the crown vic). The dashboard has either silver or wood-grain trim with metal used for the door releases and around the base and top of the gear shift lever. We found the switchgear well designed and easy to use.  one cautionary note (well, actually two of them): a steeply raked windshield can reflect a lot of glare off the top of the dashboard (at least it did in the car we drove with a tan-colored 'pebble' interior; 'shale' and 'black' interiors also are available), and a driver wearing sunglasses can have trouble reading the darkly colored gauges in the se and sel models. Sporty st and electric join newly redesigned lineup. introductionone of the most popular compacts on the market, the ford focus has a sharp, futuristic look that leaves behind old stereotypes of small, affordable american cars. Completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, the focus makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in its class. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and a 6-speed automatic is optional, with selectshift manual mode an option for the automatic. The standard 2. 0-liter engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.  epa fuel economy estimates for the 2013 ford focus are 26/36 mpg city/highway with 5-speed manual, 28/38 mpg with 6-speed automatic.  the new 2013 focus st features a more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine that cranks out an impressive 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Focus st comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and sport-tuned suspension. Focus st comes as a hatchback only with a special body kit. The sporty focus st is rated 23/32 mpg city/highway.  the focus electric is powered by a 107-kilowatt electric motor that has an estimated range of 76 miles per full charge and an epa energy efficiency equivalent rating of 110 mpge city and 99 mpge highway or 105 mpge combined. It's an electric car, so gas stations are a thing of the past. The focus electric competes most closely with the leaf, although the mitsubishi i-miev is a smaller, less expensive all-electric alternative. The soft materials are clearly high quality, while the hard trim looks slathered on. There's excellent legroom in front, but rear legroom is only moderate. The gauges are easy to read and include a big tachometer and speedometer with cool blue needles.  the 2013 focus uses the myford touch connectivity interface powered by microsoft's sync. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it was designed that way, but it doesn't always work that way. We found this latest version of myford touch difficult to use.  on the road, the focus is exceptionally quiet. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with luxury-levels of sound insulation practically everywhere, including the doors, windshield, carpet and headliner. Ride quality was smooth and soft. We found the standard engine extremely smooth with plenty of power. The focus electric comes with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 60/40 folding rear seats, myford touch and myford mobile interfaces, with two unique driving screens, rearview camera, reverse sensing system, mykey, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, rearview camera, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe ford focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The hatchback looks especially aerodynamic. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous (pre-2012) focus.  active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the chevrolet cruze are doing this, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split-trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps make the focus look being safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the focus chassis uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorthe first thing we notice about the focus is its seats. Focus models have had comfortable seats for years tne the current models come standard in sturdy fabric, with leather optional. The seats in the focus are much better than those in the chevrolet cruze.  the interior of the focus feels like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, we could easily imagine being a pilot with all those dials, switches, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the center stack, and led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors. The focus electric feels even more futuristic, with two screens that show information about driving efficiency, charge capacity and other do-dads related to the electric powertrain.  the gauges on the dashboard and instrument panel are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. However, we haven't been in a base s model, maybe it's got a more spartan interior missing the overkill trim. Ford says it's designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver.
