2002 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New explorer seats seven. introductionall new for 2002, the ford explorer is better than the previous version in every respect. Handling and ride quality are improved with a new frame and an independent rear suspension. Performance is quicker with new or improved overhead-cam engines. It's a quieter, more refined vehicle with an all-new interior. New safety features are being introduced.  but the biggest news for the explorer is the availability of third-row seating, allowing it to carry up to seven passengers. It's roomier and more comfortable, benefits of its longer wheelbase, wider track and some clever engineering.  in spite of all this, the new explorer looks familiar inside and out. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth; eddie bauer and limited come with leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is now standard on all models, boosting the explorer's power considerably. A new overhead-cam v8 695) is optional on all models. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional. Xls does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8.  xlt 27,780) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, a cd stereo instead of cassette, and more interior features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The new five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655.  limited and eddie bauer models (both $34,055) come with leather seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, a 290-watt six-cd stereo with six speakers, adjustable power pedals, fog lights, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and special wheels; there's also a white pearl coat limited that uses frost accents.  third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800) are options available on all models. A trailer towing prep package 395) replaces the class ii hitch (standard) with a class iii hitch, and adds a 3. 73 limited-slip rear axle and other hardware.  front side-impact (side curtain) airbags 495) are optional, which are designed to protect front and second-row occupants. Dual front airbags are standard. Anti-lock brakes are standard. Seatbelts use retractors and pretensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The headliner is a new safety canopy (that replaces the side curtain airbags) designed to protect occupants during a rollover in addition to protecting them from a side impact by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Smarter airbags, ford's advancetrac electronic stability program, power-adjustable pedals, and a telescoping steering wheel will also be added near the end of 2001. Everything on it is new, but the styling is an evolutionary design. It still looks like an explorer, just fresher and more contemporary. Ford didn't want to take any risks with the explorer's design after the styling of the previous taurus was so roundly criticized. It's a handsome vehicle and it looks contemporary. New jeweled headlamps and tail lamps improve safety. Better perimeter lighting from approach lights mounted on the bottoms of the outside mirrors enhances security. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. Ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners. A beefed up roof rack was designed to support up to 200 pounds.  while the new explorer attracted little attention, the new mountaineer caused people in parking lots to stop and point; people on the highway would look at it as they passed by, then stare in their mirrors.  the new explorer is the same overall length and the previous model, but it sits on a (two-inch) longer wheelbase and a much wider track, making it more stable and more comfortable. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. Leather on the eddie bauer model is attractive, but it seems like they could have put leather on the visible inside edge of the seat bottom. We've only glimpsed the cloth and weren't overly impressed, but it may have been a base xls model.  handsome gray wood accents, adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel (cy2002), and increased seat travel make the explorer fit a wider variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats and a relatively large center console help keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward, though, especially on the driver's door; i found myself fumbling around for it at night. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but they wouldn't accommodate my one-liter poland springs water bottle.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons for them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters. Finding and pressing the seat heater button illuminates a small indicator for each seat on the climate control display. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust and there's a knob on the uplevel seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the decision to add a third row of seating drove much of the design and engineering of the 2002 explorer. It isn't comfortable for an adult, however. When cargo space is needed, simply squeeze a lever and lightly push the third row forward. With some practice, it's possible to unlock the rear hatch, open it, and flip the third row out of the way with one hand, which is important when juggling an armload of groceries. The third-row bench folds neatly into the foot well. Well, maybe not so neatly.  the downside here is that the cargo floor is not flat in seven-passenger explorers. Neither the second nor the third rows fold perfectly flat. So the floor slopes back toward the rear hatch. Ride quality and handling are greatly im. 2010 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A standard among full-size suvs. introductionthe ford expedition is a full-size sport-utility vehicle. It seats up to eight people, hauls a mountain of gear, and tows moderately heavy trailers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. That's nice on long drives.  changes for 2010 are minimal. There is the mykey programmable vehicle key, the availability of the sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system, three new colors, and trailer sway control is standard. Expedition was last redesigned for 2007.  with its combination of utility, a smooth, stable ride and a pleasant interior, the ford expedition is a fine choice for families that tow or take driving vacations.  the ford expedition comes in two lengths, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, front and rear air conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, alarm, an am/fm/cd stereo with mp3 player connectivity and rear controls, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead console, and illuminated visors are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r17 tires on alloy wheels, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable heated outside mirrors, a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system, and a keyless entry keypad.  the expedition xlt el 38,610) and xlt el 4wd 41,510) are equipped the same as standard wheelbase versions, except they come with a split-folding third-row seat and a conversation mirror.  options for xlt models include third-row bench seat 875) or power-operated third-row bench seat 1,370), leather captain's chairs 1,295), a heavy-duty towing package 395), sirius satellite radio 195), rear-seat entertainment 1,295), and a power moonroof 995). A convenience package 895) includes a reverse-sensing system, power rear quarter windows, universal garage-door opener, six-disc cd changer, and power-adjustable pedals.  the expedition eddie bauer 40,890) and eddie bauer 4wd 43,790) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique power-folding split third-row seat. Other standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, memory for the mirrors and driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium sound system with six-disc cd changer, trip computer, conversation mirror, mirror-mounted turn signals, power-adjustable pedals, and protective cladding for the lower body panels. The eddie bauer el 43,075) and eddie bauer el 4wd 45,970) are equipped, basically, like the standard-wheelbase versions.  options for eddie bauer models over and above those of the xlt include heated and cooled front seats 625), power running boards 995), a navigation system 1,995), second-row captain's chairs 795), and air suspension 485).  the expedition limited 42,660) and limited 4wd 45,560) add heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, universal garage-door opener, power rear quarter windows, and 255/70r18 tires on chrome alloy wheels. The limited el 45,310) and limited el 4wd 48,210) are equipped the same.  the expedition king ranch 45,190) and king ranch 4wd 48,090) have upgraded chaparral leather upholstery, king ranch badging, and gold exterior accents. The leather also trims the center console lid, steering wheel and door panels, while wood trim can be found on the center console, shifter handle and instrument panel. King ranch el 47,840) and king ranch 4wd el 50,740) have the same features.  safety equipment includes front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, three-row head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover deployment, tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist, and advancetrac electronic stability control with roll stability control. A rear obstacle detection system is standard on limited and king ranch, and optional on eddie bauer. Trailer sway control is standard. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition use many of the components from the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, which improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess.  this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish.  expedition el models stretch the wheelbase to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 22 cubic feet of cargo volume. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet.  they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs almost 6,000 pounds, and a loaded el with 4wd will be comfortably over that.  the king ranch model can be identified by its gold exterior accents and unique wheel design.  the expedition comes with running boards as standard equipment. Power retractable running boards that deploy when the doors are opened are optional. Some prefer no running boards, but that doesn't appear to be an option. interiorthe ford expedition features a rich blend of finishes, textures and color. Indeed, a king ranch is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road. Leather-upholstered examples are available with a heating/cooling feature that makes them a more comfortable companion in winter and summer. Generous driver's-seat travel helps accommodate taller drivers, and it's a perfect match for the expedition's movable pedals, so a wide range of sizes of drivers can sit comfortably.  the second seating row reflects ford's thoughtful approach to passenger comfort: the standard 40/20/40 bench seat incorporates a center section that slides, bringing a child seat within easier reach of front-seat passengers. Optional second-row captain's chairs with a center-aisle pass-through can be substituted for adult-rated comfort.  packaging advantages afforded by the expedition's independent rear suspension enable the third-row seat to deliver more comfort for adults compared to the accommodations provided by the chevy tahoe. In fact, third-row room is among the best of any suv, though three adults won't want to sit in the back for long. The high ride height also makes getting in and out a task for children.  the expedition's liftgate with its flip-up glass hatch makes access to the cargo area very easy. The expedition's second- and third-row bench-type seats fold flat into the cargo floor, affording a long cargo area that can be easily loaded. In this regard, the expedition is much better designed than gm's large suvs. The expedition is also available with an optional power-folding third-row seat and electronically powered liftgate to make it even easier to load cargo. However, the seat cushions of the second- and third-row seats are a little slim in order to allow the seats to fold properly.  the expedition is about more than convenience. A dvd-based navigation system with sizable 6. 5-inch screen is available as an option. The rear-seat dvd entertainment system has an eight-inch screen that flips down from the headliner and also includes two sets of wireless headphones. A plug-in jack for an mp3 player is standard acro.
